The Hague of the EastIn the second half of the 19th century, many former Indians came to Arnhem. This also happened in The Hague, which gave Arnhem its nickname 'The Hague of the East'. Many of The Hague's former Indians went to the wooded surroundings of Arnhem. They took the dialect to Arnhem, so the present-day dialects from both cities are very similar.
Green municipalityArnhem is one of the greenest cities in the Netherlands. Well-known, of course, are the nearby Veluwe forests, but walking through one of the many city parks is also highly recommended. Especially the one known as Sonsbeek park, with Huis Sonsbeek and the characteristic waterfall. Another well-known park in the Gelderse capital is Zypendaal park, with Castle Zypendaal, an 18th century country house that is furnished as a museum. Here you can see the beautiful, original 18th-century interior.
Cultural highlightsIn Arnhem, there are many theatres, concert halls and a theatre. An excting evening plan is always close by. A beautiful theatre performance in the Stadsschouwburg, a concert in the Musis Sacrum concert hall or a simple night to the movies; there are endless possibilities. Do you like visiting museums? Then visit the Kröller Möller Museum in nearby Otterlo.
